Ginebra’s Brownlee still Meralco’s nightmare, books ticket to semis
By Mark Patriarca
Humble Justin Brownlee let’s his game speak for himself as he led Barangay Ginebra to another semifinals stint by making a quick work against playoffs rival Meralco, 104-90, in 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Ginebra’s resident import Brownlee was unstoppable on both ends, firing 36 markers while dishing out nine assists and three steals. It is also his 4th consecutive Best Player of the Game award which became instrumental for Ginebra’s stellar play as of late. Greg Slaughter and L.A Tenorio also provided additional artillery by scoring double figures, 14 and 11 respectively.
Meanwhile, Meralco reinforcement Arinze Onuaku’s 21-point, 13 boards performance went for naught as well as Chris Newsome’s 17 markers.
This now marks the 7th game winning streak of Ginebra dating from the elimination phase and their 6th straight semifinals appearance – the longest active streak according to PBA chief statistician Fidel Mangonon III.
Barangay Ginebra is set to face the winner of GlobalPort and Rain or Shine series that went the distance. Those two teams will battle it out tomorrow, July 12, for the chance to face the league’s current hottest team in a best-of-five series.
