0-5! Gilas ends 2019 Fiba World Cup with blowout loss vs Iran
Gilas Pilipinas ended their 2019 Fiba World Cup campaign in China the exact same way they started the quadrennial tournament: Listless and flat-footed.
The Philippine national team will return home with a 0-5 win-loss record after suffering a 75-95 loss to Asian rival Iran.
Gilas started the game pretty well and even took a 19-17 lead behind their hot shooting from beyond the arc.
In the first period, Gilas knocked down 6 out of 11 triples, their best shooting clip from beyond the arc in the tournament.
But Iran imposed their might in rebounding and points in the paint the rest of the first half to build a 14-point lead, 48-34.
A 16-7 spurt by the much-disciplined Iranian team made it 64-41, putting the game out of reach for Gilas.
With the win, and China’s loss to Nigeria, Iran clinched Asia’s lone Olympic berth by virtue of a higher quotient.
Andray Blatche was ejected with 5:23 left after being whistled for two technical fouls.
Blatche finished with 12 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists.
