2 college teams involve in corruption scandal
The secrets are all out — this alleged corruption in Philippine college basketball has to be the most scandalous corruption for the longest time.
In an exclusive report by Abante, two college teams, which are supported by business tycoon Manny V. Pangilinan, are currently leading in raiding prized blue-chip recruits.
Also, two different sources from Abante also confessed that MVP funded the Ateneo and San Beda’s basketball programs respectively by at least P100 million every year.
“Malaki ang P100 milyon na budget ng dalawang team sa kada taong sinasalihan nilang dalawang liga. Malaking bahagi ng milyones sa scouting ng players at teams kapag may mga palaro sa labas ng Metro Manila — Philippine National Games, PRISAA National Games, National CHED Games, SCUAA Games, University Games, Palarong Pambansa, Batang Pinoy, Little Olympics, etc.,” said the Abante source.
Which is why the Ateneo basketball program is the third winningest team in University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), amassing 30 championships — 19 for the Blue Eaglets, two for Lady Eagles, and 20 for the Blue Eagles.
Ateneo secured a five-peat from 2008 to 2012 under coach Norman Black, and recently won the 2017 title under the guidance of current head coach Tab Baldwin.
On the other hand, the San Beda basketball program already has 43 championships — 22 for the Red Cubs and 21 for Red Lions.
San Beda has dominated the league by winning 10 championships for the past 12 years.
Although this issue did not come as a surprise already, the details that were spilled regarding the commercialization of college recruitment still did not sit well to most basketball aficionados.
