Gilas Pilipinas will have fewer NBA players to worry about when they face the Dominican Republic in the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup on August 25 at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.
Al Horford of the Boston Celtics and Chris Duarte of the Sacramento Kings have withdrawn from playing for the Dominican Republic in the competition. No reason has been given for their sudden decision, which comes as good news for Philippine men’s basketball team head coach Vincent “Chot” Reyes.
Despite the absence of Horford and Duarte, the Dominican Republic still boasts three NBA players on its roster, including Karl-Anthony Towns from the Minnesota Timberwolves, Lester Quinones from the Golden State Warriors, and Justin Minaya from the Portland Trailblazers.
The remaining members of the Dominican Republic pool include LJ Figueroa, Luis Santos, Antonio Pena, Luis David Montero, Gelvis Solano, Jean Montero, Andres Feliz, Gerardo Suero, Eloy Vargas, Victor Liz, and Rigoberto Mendoza.
