Alas on Phoenix Game 1 loss to SMB: We’re facing a national team
After their Game 1 loss, Phoenix head coach Louie Alas was reminded of the caliber of the multi-titled San Miguel team as limiting June Mar Fajardo wasn’t enough to stop the defending champs.
Alas realized this when his Fuel Masters managed to contain the Five-Time league MVP but still lost, 88-100, in Game 1 of their 2019 PBA Philippine Cup semifinal series last Saturday.
Fajardo only managed to score 9 points and grab 9 rebounds as Phoenix’s defense clamped him down. However, the other Beermen stepped up in his absence en route to the 1-0 semis lead.
Alex Cabagnot top-scored with 26 points with seven assists while Chris Ross and Marcio Lassiter had 14 markers apiece.
“Sabi ko sa team ko, we focused so much on their big guys na nalimutan natin yung perimeter nila,” Alas said.
“So now malaki na yung problema ko, magpe-prepare ako kay June Mar, magpe-prepare pa ako sa perimeter nila,” he added.
The Fuel Masters actually had the lead at the end of the first quarter but the battle-tested Beermen stormed back in the second canto to take the driver’ seat.
“Sabi ko nga sa kanila, ‘We’re facing a national team here’,” Alas lamented.
“You can’t blink against San Miguel. Bibigay talaga nila sayo yan.
Alas and the Fuel Masters have their sights locked on Game Two on Monday.
