ALEX Eala’s planned homecoming event at the Philippine Arena in December has drawn mixed reactions over the inclusion of several celebrities in the program.
The event, organized by a local online publication, is expected to feature Eala in a special match alongside Indonesian netter Janice Tjen.
Among the celebrities listed in the event are eight-division world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, Piolo Pascual, Anne Curtis, Julia Barretto, Donny Pangilinan and Andrea Brillantes.
Eala’s success in international tennis has earned her widespread recognition in the Philippines, with her recent achievements bringing pride to the country. Her growing profile has also led to appearances at fashion shows and other high-profile events.
However, the celebrity lineup for her homecoming event became a topic of discussion among some observers, who questioned the role of the entertainers in an event intended to honor the tennis star.
Some asked whether the program would include an actual tennis match by the celebrities, while others wondered if the event might resemble a variety show because of the number of celebrities involved.
There were also questions about the ticket prices and whether additional star power was necessary, considering Eala’s own popularity.
One comment suggested that Pacquiao’s inclusion was understandable because of his athletic background, while proposing that other Filipino sports legends such as Hidilyn Diaz, Carlos Yulo and Paeng Nepomuceno could also be invited.
The event organizer has yet to issue a detailed response to the reactions. (Adrian Co)
