Alex Eala set to miss cousin’s wedding due to US Open run

ALEXANDRA Eala will miss a family wedding in Seattle this weekend after her run at the US Open extended beyond the second round.

Eala was supposed to be one of the bridesmaids at the wedding of one of her a cousins. Her parents were also scheduled to serve as principal sponsors.

But after Eala advanced to the third round, the 17th-seeded Filipina will have to stay in New York instead of flying to Seattle for the celebration.

“The EALAs are celebrating a wedding this weekend in Seattle of one of our nieces. The parents of Alex are principal sponsors while Alex is supposed to be a bridesmaid along with my daughter, Lexie,” Noli Eala, Alexandra’s uncle, said in a post in X (formerly Twitter).

Noli said Alexandra’s plans hinged on the outcome of her second-round match against Ukraine’s Oleksandra Oliynykova.

“If she had lost, Alex would have flown straight out to Seattle,” he said.

However, Eala cruised past Oliynykova, 6-1, 6-4, at Louis Armstrong Stadium to keep her US Open campaign alive.

“But because of her 2nd round victory, Alex has to stay on and miss the wedding,” Noli said.

Rather than leaving New York, the Eala family will now adjust its plans and travel to the US Open after the wedding to support Alexandra.

“So now, the Ealas are flying in to NY after the wedding to watch her instead,” Noli said.

Eala, the No. 17 seed, advanced to the third round after opening her campaign with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over American qualifier Mary Stoiana.

Her latest victory extended a breakthrough season that has included her first WTA title and a rise into the world’s top 20. (Adrian Co)
