Alexandra Eala’s semifinal defeat to China’s Wang Xiyu at the Asian Games on Thursday was described as a “disappointment” and a “missed golden opportunity” for the Philippines.
The assessment was posted by a netizen who asked generative AI chatbot ChatGPT to analyze Eala’s unexpected loss in a tournament where she entered as the top seed and one of the leading contenders for the women’s singles gold medal.
In its response, ChatGPT said Eala’s exit could reasonably be viewed as an underperformance given her seeding and the field, while cautioning against describing the loss as a “choke.”
“Gold was a reasonable expectation, although never a guarantee,” ChatGPT said.
Eala took the opening set against Wang, 6-3, after racing to a 5-0 lead, but the Chinese player rallied to win the next two sets, 6-3, 6-2.
It also noted that while Eala’s bronze medal deserved recognition, the result fell short of expectations based on her standing heading into the tournament.
“Calling it an underperformance is fair; calling it a choke would require clearer evidence of her unraveling under pressure,” the AI response said. (Adrian Co)
