Boxer Jerwin Ancajas is serious in his bid to become world champion again, which has extended his stay in the US.
This means he will have to be away from his family for a few more months to continue training in Las Vegas with his coach and manager, Joven Jimenez.
“May five to six months na ata kami dito sa US. Tuloy-tuloy na muna dito bago umuwi,” said Ancajas. “Ito ‘yung dinadanan natin para makabalik sa taas. Sakrpisyo muna dito para tuloy ang kondisyon.”
Following his loss to Argentina’s Fernando Maetinez, Ancajas and his coach decided to stay in the US to access better training facilities, sparring partners, and training experts. This included sessions with well-known conditioning coach Memo Heredia.
The sacrifice paid off, as it resulted in an impressive fifth-round stoppage victory over Colombian Wilner Soto.
Ancajas now plans to go after WBA bantamweight king Takuma Inoue, brother of Japanese superstar Naoya Inoue.
“Excited po ako baka sakaling makuha natin ang laban kay Takuma,” he said.
Jimenez, for his part, said they needed to fight off homesickness to realize their goal.
“Kahit wala pang schedule na laban, iniwan namin ang pamilya namin sa Pilipinas, kahit kakalabas pa lang ng bunso ni Jerwin,” he said prior to their bout against Soto.
“Gusto naming makakuha ng belt sa 118 pounds. ‘Yan ang pangarap naming dalawa.”
