Andre Ilagan kisses US Open main draw hopes goodbye with straight-set loss against Frenchman

Filipino-Hawaiian tennis player Andre Ilagan saw his US Open campaign come to an end after a straight-set loss to French third seed Hugo Gaston in the second round of the qualifying tournament in New York.

The 25-year-old Ilagan was beaten by Gaston, 6-1, 6-3, on Court 12, ending his bid to advance to the main draw of the year’s final Grand Slam tournament.

Gaston, also 25, controlled the match from the start and secured the victory in two sets to move on in the qualifiers.

Ilagan entered the US Open qualifying draw hoping to earn a place in the main event, but his run stopped after two rounds.

His defeat leaves Alexandra Eala as the Philippines’ remaining representative in the women’s singles main draw. Eala enters the tournament as a seeded player after rising to a career-high No. 18 in the WTA rankings. (Adrian Co)
