ARELLANO University Lady Chiefs opened its 2026 V-League Collegiate Challenge campaign on a high note, dispatching NCAA champion Colegio de San Juan de Letran Lady Knights, 25-20, 25-22, 25-15, Saturday at Gameville Central Park in Mandaluyong City.
The Lady Chiefs pulled away early in the deciding set and never allowed the Lady Knights to regain their footing, completing the victory through the efforts of Cassey Florida and Heart Villaflores.
Florida led all scorers with 12 points, producing 10 kills and two blocks while also contributing seven digs and five excellent receptions. Villaflores chipped in 11 points, all from attacks.
However, Arellano’s victory was tempered by an injury scare involving Florida late in the third set. The outside hitter landed awkwardly after attempting a spike but was able to recover.
Coach Obet Javier said the team would have Florida examined as a precaution.
“Masaya, hindi dahil nanalo kami, kundi dahil nagawa namin iyung mga pina-practice namin. Pero, ngayon, may kasamang pangamba dahil nga kay Florida,” Javier said. “Malakas naman iyung look ng bata, pero kailangan pa rin namin siyang ipatingin.”
Catherine Domasig also played a key role for the Lady Chiefs, delivering 16 excellent sets and seven points.
Letran, meanwhile, played without Best Opposite Hitter Judiel Nitura. Reeza Abayon and Rheina Merwa led the Lady Knights with seven points each. (Adrian Co)
