Ashon Andrews bid farewell to the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons, embarking on a new chapter by transferring to the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers.
The Filipino-American forward formalized his move on Friday afternoon following a meeting between Erik Quintana of Familya Washington DC and Tigers head coach Pido Jarencio.
“I regret to announce that I will not be playing for UP in Season 86,” Andrews said in an interview with Tiebreaker Times. “I have made the decision to continue my collegiate career at UST.”
Andrews actually visited UST along with Quintana earlier this year, but the Roosevelt High School standout opted to return to the Fighting Maroons and play in pre-season tournaments.
The 6-foot-4 forward, who played in three UAAP games with UP in his rookie year, said he is grateful for the time he spent with the Fighting Maroons as he looks to get his career going with the Tigers.
“I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the UP Community for their kindness, care, and support throughout the past year. I also want to extend an even bigger thank you to Coach Gold [Monteverde], Tito Pato [Gregorio], and Coach Bo [Perasol] for giving me the opportunity to play at one of the highest levels of basketball in the Philippines. Additionally, I would like to thank my teammates and the rest of the coaching staff,” he said.
Andrews will have to sit out one year before being eligible for UAAP Season 87. He can still play for three seasons with the Growling Tigers. (AC)
