The Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles have finally named Brazilian Sergio Veloso as the new women’s volleyball team head coach.
Veloso, who is the current mentor of the Philippine men’s volleyball team, is taking over the spot of outgoing mentor Oliver Almadro.
“Coach Sergio will bring with him more than 37 years of successfully forming programs and coaching young and professional volleyball players in Brazil, the Maldives, and Bahrain,” Ateneo said in a statement.
“His championship experience as well as expertise in technical skill analysis and strategic planning will help the team prepare for their upcoming tournaments,” the school added.
Veloso will now have the task of bringing the Blue Eagles back to the UAAP women’s volleyball Final Four after finishing in sixth place in Season 85.
Aside from Veloso, Ateneo also appointed Raymund Gerard Augustine “Babes” Castillo as the mentor of the school’s secondary boys and girls volleyball teams.
“Coach Babes brings with him years of experience as a champion UAAP coach in high school volleyball (with National University),” Ateneo said.
“He has helped develop the technical and the tactical skills of each varsity athlete he previously coached. He also puts in special emphasis on the character and personal development of his athletes,” the school added.
Timothy James Sto. Tomas, meanwhile, will remain as the head coach of Ateneo’s seniors volleyball team.
