Ateneo clobbers UST to stay undefeated
Ateneo remains unfazed this Season 82.
The Blue Eagles completed a two-series sweep against UST Growling Tigers, 66-52, in the UAAP Season 82 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday October 5.
Both teams started the opening salvo with an ice-cold 10-8 outcome in favor of Ateneo.
It was the Katipunan-based squad that established an upper-hand over their opponent with 10 unanswered points, 26-15, in the second period.
Ateneo never let go of their lead after proving that they are still the top defensive team in the league.
UST did not just waved their white flag easily, as Mark Nonoy’s triple pushed the team with a six-point deficit, 48-54.
However, the defending champions officially capped the matchup with a 12-4 surge.
“That was tough, really tough game. They made our lives miserable especially in the fourth quarter when they started making shots,” said Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin.
Ateneo previously survived UST in first round with a 71-70 victory, but they made sure this time that the latter will not steal the game.
Thirdy Ravena led Ateneo 17 points and nine rebounds while SJ Belangel had 11 markers and four boards to keep their record immaculate this second round.
On UST, Nonoy was the lone double-digit scorer with 18 points, while Chabi Yo grabbed 14 boards but only limited to just six markers.
UST suffered their first back-to-back losses this season, dropping at 4-4.
