Ateneo cruise past NU in 26-point blowout
Defending champions Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles torched the National University Bulldogs, 72-46, in the UAAP Season 81 men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City Saturday.
Since the beginning of the match, the Bulldogs seemingly woke up on the wrong side of the bed, trailing as much as 27 points late in the fourth quarter, 65-38.
The Bulldogs did not come alive, suffering a 26-point beating, 72-46.
“Our defense was the way we wanted it to be play,” said Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin.
“I like it when we set a standard, a precedence, now we have something to live up to,” he added.
Antonio Joson was the lone double-digit scorer in NU with 11 points. John Llyod Clemente had seven points while Shaun and Dave Ildefonso were limited to four points apiece.
Thirdy Ravena led Ateneo with 13 points on top of three steals and four rebounds.
Ateneo’s next watch will be the 0-2 University of the East on Wednesday, September 26, but Baldwin wanted to give them the respect they deserve.
“We haven’t starting to prepare for them yet but I only expect anything from them but their best game. It’s our job as a basketball team to respect our opponent,” he ended.
