Defending champion Ateneo de Manila University cruised past the University of Sydney for an 88-50 win in the quarterfinals of the World University Basketball Series on Friday at the Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Tokyo.
The Blue Eagles dismantled the Australians with textbook precision, using a stifling defense that limited Sydney for most of the game.
Mason Amos led the way as Ateneo inflicted significant damage in the three-point area, successfully making a total of 15 three-pointers.
With the Australians struggling to buy a basket, the Eagles took a commanding 49-29 halftime advantage.
Ateneo then mounted a 21-9 blitz in the third and basically took the fight out of the University of Sydney.
Amos finished with 17 points, even as Kai Ballungay tallied 13 markers. Shawn Tuano and Jason Credo added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Ateneo will next battle Hakuoh University in the semifinals.
