Ateneo holds off Adamson for ninth straight win

Ateneo were surely threatened by this one.

The Blue Eagles managed to survive a late comeback by Adamson Soaring Falcons with an 80-74 victory in the UAAP Season 82 men’s basketball tournament at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday October 9.

Ateneo was trailing by three at 34-37 in the first half when they started to ride on Thirdy Ravena’s wave, which would eventually become 13-2 run to cap off the third period.

Every time that Adamson tried to mount a rally in the final frame, Ateneo would answer back with their own version of stops.

Still, that did not stop the Soaring Falcons to attempt a heist including a steal and a lay-up by Joshua Yerro with 8 ticks left to inch closer at 74-77.

Mike Nieto would then seal the deal for the Ateneo with his free shots.

“We really survived Adamson in the end,” said Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin.

“We made a lot of bonehead plays. There’s no excuse for that. We have to practice those kinds of situations. We didn’t perform well in that scenario in either end. We have to figure out how to be good in either situation.”

Still, Ateneo remain unbeaten in their nine games this Season 82.

Ravena registered a season-high 23 points for Ateneo while William Navarro asserted himself with 11 markers, eight rebounds, and four steals.

For Adamson, who now owns a 3-6 record, they have yet to end their misery after dropping their four straight games.

Adamson’s backcourt duo of Jerrick Ahanmisi and Val Chauca led the team with 17 points apiece.
