Ateneo outlasts UST in clutch time
As advertised, both teams would produce a great match from start to finish.
In the end, the Ateneo Blue Eagles would survive UST Growling Tigers’ threat, 71-70, to remain undefeated in the UAAP Season 82 men’s basketball tournament at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum, on Wednesday September 11.
After a triple by Renzo Subido that gave UST a 64-67 advantage with more than three minutes remaining in the final period, Ateneo would unleash their suffocating defense that held their opponent scoreless when it mattered most.
Ange Kouame proved that height is still might, as he scored a go-ahead putback, 68-67, on top with crucial block by Soulemane Chabi Yo’s jumper with 24 ticks on the clock.
“We understood this was going to be a really tough game and I feel fortunate we won the game. This is the kind of game you can credit the team as much as you want,” said Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin.
Thirdy Ravena and Matt Nieto would sink three free-throws to seal the deal, but Subido would sink a no-bearing three-pointer at the buzzer to end the game, 71-70.
Ravena bounced back for the Blue Eagles after an underwhelming performance against La Salle with 17 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Kouame posted a double-double of 11 points (nine in the second half) and 10 boards.
Ateneo would keep their record unscathed with a 3-0 winless record.
Soulemane Chabi Yo led UST with 25 points and 13 rebounds, while Rhenz Abando, Renzo Subido, and Mark Nonoy had nine markers each.
The Growling Tigers would suffer their first setback of the season after winning their first two games.
