Ateneo rallies behind Verano to keep UE winless


Ateneo de Manila University dropped their championship calibre on University of the East, 89-62, in UAAP Season 81 men’s basketball championship at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan City Wednesday.

The Blue Eagles needed only 12 minutes to get its 10 players add into the scoring column. The Katipunan-based squad finished even stronger, limiting Red Warriors’ main man Alvin Pasaol to just 17 points.

“We are quite happy with the result. Coming into this game, we gave importance to our rebounds,” said assistant coach Sandy Arrespacochaga.

Ateneo dominated the rebounding department, getting 46 boards compared to UE’s 27.

Raffy Verano paced Ateneo with 12 points, four rebounds, two assits and two steals before being benched in the fourth quarter due to a right ankle sprain.

The defending champions are now at solo third place with 3-1 record while the Red Warriors dropped its fourth match in as many games.

Ateneo’s next game would be against the University of Santo Tomas Growlign Tigers on Saturday, September 29, at the same venue.
