Ateneo rips arch rival La Salle
he Ateneo Blue Eagles drew first blood against their rival La Salle Green Archers, 81-69, in the UAAP Season 82 men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum, on Sunday September 8.
All hell broke loose when the Blue squad broke away with a 30-28 lead by detonating a 28-1 run in the second canto that became a 51-29 advantage to end the first half.
La Salle didn’t back down in the payoff period, as they pulled out a late 15-5 surge to cut the deficit by eight, 67-75, courtesy of Andrei Caracut’s triple with 2:30 ticks left in the game clock.
“I think that break we had at the end of the second quarter was a surprise to us and it was a surprise for them, and in the end it was the cushion I think that we depended on in the second half,” said Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin.
In the end, it was Gian Mamuyac who stepped up in crunch time, by scoring four out of Ateneo’s last six points to finally seal the deal, 81-69.
Mamuyac scored eight of 14 points in the final frame of again, to go along with four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
“This is a typical Ateneo-La Salle game. It was tough every step of the way,” Baldwin stated.
The Nieto twins were also a force to be reckoned with, as Mike fired 18 points together with his five rebounds, four assists, and two steals, while Matt tallied 15 points and three boards.
Ateneo now has a 2-0 standing, tying with UST at the top.
For the La Salle, Jamie Orme-Malonzo made a spectacular debut with 18 points and 10 rebounds, including a two-handed poster dunk over Thirdy Ravena.
