Austria says SMC gunning for top seed to avoid Ginebra
After a 104-98 thrashing of Tropang Talk ‘N text, San Miguel Beermen Head Coach Leo Austria admitted that he wanted to claim top seed finish so his team can prevent an early Ginebra face-off in the quarterfinals.
“We need to be at number 1 because at 4 or 5 we will be facing a Ginebra in a best-of-three, so we want to avoid Ginebra,” Austria said in the post-game interview.
The Beermen’s victory in the last game of the elimination round put them in the top spot of the Commisioner’s Cup rankings. This means that the top team will face the No.8 seed, which is the Star Hotshots.
“I’d rather face Star rather than Ginebra in the quarterfinals,” Austria said.
“But we don’t have to take Star lightly dahil alam natin na they have the momentum by beating their last opponent,” Austria added.
Austria was thankful that his players played coordinately in the last minutes of the game and properly executed their game plans which helped the team pull off the victory.
“Catching up lagi kami… Nasunod lahat ng game plan naming doon sa last 6 minutes,” Austria ended.
