AWOL! TNT Slams Kelly’s Retirement
Kelly Williams’ sudden decision to put an end to his 14-year PBA career lAstdid not sit well with the officials of the TNT KaTropa.
TNT KaTropa team governor Ricky Vargas said he considered Kelly’s move as AWOL or absence without official leave as he left the team’s bubble at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna without a word.
Vargas added that they were stunned after only learning about the 38-year-old forward’s decision to retire via his social media account posting.
“For your information, Kelly did not inform the management about his desire to retire. He just left the team bubble on AWOL,” Vargas said in an interview with The Manila Times’ Josef Ramos.
Vargas added that Williams’ move could be a bad precedent to future basketball players who will announce their retirement.
Prior to his retirement, Williams signed a maximum contract with the KaTropa until the end of the year.
“That’s not really appropriate, a very bad precedent,” Vargas added. “I respect Kelly’s decision to retire and thank him for all he has done for TNT. I wish Kelly all the very best.”
