Barangay Ginebra are undisputed Kings of PBA attendance
Ginebra’s win against Meralco solidified their bid not only as the best team in the league, but also the most popular team among the basketball-crazy Filipino crowd.
The Gin Kings bagged back-to-back crowns after beating the Meralco Bolts, 101-96, in a Game 7 thriller that drew a record-breaking crowd of 54,086 fans.
Game 7 broke the record set by Game 6 last Wednesday, with 53,642 attendees flocking the Philippine Arena hoping to see Ginebra win at an earlier date.
The opening day of the 2014-2015 season was the previous record, as Ginebra and TNT played in the second game of a double-header in front of 52,612 people. Ginebra gave the fans what they paid for, blowing out the KaTropa, 101-81.
Ginebra is also involved in the fourth-highest attendance in PBA history, drawing 36,445 in Game 6 of last year’s Govs’ Cup Finals where Justin Brownlee hit a dagger trey from straightaway en route the Gin Kings’ first title in eight years.
Manila Clasico is arguably one of the best rivalries in the league’s history. And it immortalized both Ginebra and San Mig Coffee when 24,883 people showed up at the Big Dome to witness Game 7 of the Philippine Cup semifinals last 2014. Eventual-champs San Mig Coffee handily defeated the Gin Kings, 110-87.
