Ben Simmons picks Luka Doncic as Rookie of the Year
For the reigning Rookie of the Year and Philadelphia 76ers’ Ben Simmons, Luka Doncic of Dallas Mavericks should be the next ROY over Atlanta Hawks’ Trae Young.
Asked by the reporters who he thinks will take home the award, he answered “Luka” and explained why he deserves it.
“He’s playing better. Like, his team’s winning more games,” Simmons told reporters Tuesday (Manila time) ahead of the 76ers matchup with the Mavs. “Trae Young is killing it. Same as Donovan (Mitchell last year). But it’s just overall I think Luka’s got his team playing a little better.”
The rookie sensation from Slovenia has been the favorite to bag the award, averaging 21.1 points, 7.6 rebounds and 5.1 assists. Doncic also tops the points score board and minutes played this season.
Although Young’s season started up rocky, he’s racking up points after points lately, averaging 25.1 points and 9.3 assists after the All-Star break.
Meanwhile, Simmons was drafted in 2016 as the top pick but due to a foot injury, the Australian baller played his rookie season in 2017-2018 campaign. Last year, the 22-year-old averaged 15.8 points, 8.1 rebounds and 8.1 assists and has beaten notable stars like Utah Jazz’s Donovan Mitchell and Boston Celtics’ Jayson Tatum.
Even though it’s too early to predict who’s going to succeed Simmons, both Doncic and Young has proven that they can dominate the hard court as well as the veterans of the league. Fans will just have to wait and see who’s going to take the ROY award and end this debate once and for all. (Janiel Abby Toralba)
