Blackwater Player Tested Positive For COVID-19, Match With Rain or Shine Postponed
A Blackwater Elite player was tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) while inside the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup bubble in Clark, Pampanga on Saturday evening.
Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) CEO and COVID-19 testing czar Vivencio Dizon said on Sunday that the Elite player was already brought to the national quarantine facility in New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac.
The entire Elite squad as well as the TNT Tropang Giga team, which the Blackwater faced last Thursday, was put on isolation, according to Dizon.
“Yung ating PBA player na may lumabas na positive result kagabi, na-isolate na. We’re asking the PBA to conduct an Antigen and RT-PCR for the player who tested positive,” said Dizon in a virtual press conference.
As a result, PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial announced the postponement of the scheduled match between Elite and Rain or Shine Elasto Painters this afternoon, while the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings-Magnolia Hotshots game with push through.
“Cancelled ang first game. Pero tuloy ang Manila Clasico,” said Marcial. “We’ll put Rain or Shine vs Blackwater on a different date. Most likely, isa pang triple-header.’”
Dizon, however, said that the COVID-19 positive case among an Elite player was just an isolated case and does not mean that the PBA “bubble has been burst.”
“There is no reason to say that the bubble has been breached. The protocols have been followed,” said Dizon.
Prior to this, a referee who worked the Elite-Alaska Aces match on Tuesday evening was suspected to have COVID-19 but has turned out negative from both antigen and RT-PCR tests.
