Blue Eagles dismantle UP in late period
The Ateneo Blue Eagles humbled the UP Fighting Maroons, 83-66, in the UAAP Season 81 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday, October 14.
UP was still on the run when Ateneo was trying to break away, as Bright Akhuetie and Paul Desiderio tried to keep their team afloat.
However, the Blue Eagles leaned on Thirdy Ravena and Jolo Mendoza in the fourth period to give their team enough momentum to cruise past UP with a double-digit lead.
“It’s important for us to come out strong especially in second round, and we came from against FEU,” said Ateneo assistant coach Sandy Arrespacochaga.
Ravena had a double-double of 21 points and 11 rebounds while Tyler Tio filled the void that was left by Matt Nieto, scoring 12 markers and five assists.
Ateneo improved their standings at 6-2 to grab the solo lead.
For UP, Bright Akhuetie finished with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Paul Desiderio had 16 markers and seven boards.
The Fighting Maroons fell down to a 3-5 win-loss record.
