CONVERGE FiberXers survived a late challenge from the import-less NLEX Road Warriors, 112-110, in the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup on Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Cameron Clark powered Converge with 37 points and 12 rebounds to earn Player of the Game honors as the FiberXers secured their second straight victory and improved to 5-4.
NLEX, playing without injured import DeQuan Jones, stayed within striking distance throughout the contest despite facing Converge’s new reinforcement.
The FiberXers eventually created some separation late in the game, taking a 108-104 lead. The Road Warriors repeatedly cut the deficit to two points, but Juan Gomez de Liaño converted crucial free throws to restore Converge’s cushion at 112-106.
NLEX refused to go quietly as Ljay Gonzales knocked down a four-point play after converting a three-pointer while drawing a foul from Converge’s Calvin Abueva.
The Road Warriors, however, ran out of time in completing their comeback as the FiberXers held on for the narrow victory.
Despite the loss, NLEX finished the first portion of its Governors’ Cup campaign atop Group A with a 7-2 record. (Adrian Co)
