Carl Jammes “Wonder Boy” Martin is hoping Jayson and John Riel Casimero will stand by their pre-fight declaration that Team Casimero would retire from boxing if the Filipino boxer defeated David Picasso.
Before Martin’s showdown with the Mexican contender, Jayson Casimero said in a live video that he and John Riel “Quadro Alas” Casimero, would call it quits if Martin emerged victorious.
Martin delivered on fight night, beating Picasso via split decision on November 1 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to capture the WBC Silver featherweight title and preserve his unbeaten record.
During his appearance at the PSA Forum, Martin was asked regarding Casimero’s earlier statement.
“Well, ewan ko po kung retired na siya ngayon. Alam ko, November 1 po, nag-retire na siya after my fight. I hope panindigan niya iyung mga binitawan niyang salita. Pero possible naman po kung ano ang mangyari. Kung ano man iyung mga sinabi niya, okay naman po ako doon,” Martin said.
The 27-year-old from Lagawe, Ifugao stressed that he was not particularly bothered by whatever reaction or criticism might come his way following the issue.
“Tanggap ko naman po iyon. Nandito tayo sa larangan na ito, at masaya po ako, basher man ako o hindi. Okay lang po sa akin iyon,” he added.
Martin’s victory over Picasso marked the biggest win of his professional career, improving his record to 29-0 with 21 knockouts.
While the retirement challenge has added another talking point to Martin’s breakthrough victory, the unbeaten Filipino made it clear that he is comfortable with whatever comes next. (Jesus Nathaniel Valdez)
