Ceres Negros stuns Port FC, 1-0
By Erel Cabatbat
Team Captain Stephan Schrock scored the lone goal with a big help from the opposing team’s keeper as Ceres Negros knocked out Thai FA champion Port FC, 1-0 in the second round of AFC Champions League qualifiers at the PAT Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Philippine side got the lead courtesy of Schrock’s cross which Port FC keeper Worarut mishandled towards his own net six minutes into the second half.
“Actually I misinterpreted the sign of Mikey (Ott) so I did the wrong decision. Luckily it turned out well for me and we are very happy and very proud of what have done today. Its not only the goal, its the way we had each other,” Schrock said after the game.
The Busmen had a chance to double their lead but new recruit Hikaru Minegishi’s strike was deflected by Worarut.
The home team tried its best to find the equalizer but Ceres’ defense held on to preserve the win.
“It was a very tough game especially in the second half. After two weeks of preparation I think we were not ready but the boys gave everything in the game and fought until the end so I congratulate them. They really did a good job, “ Risto Vidalkovic, Ceres Negros head coach, added.
Ceres will travel to Japan to face FC Tokyo on January 28. A win over the Japanese side will send the Busmen to the group stage of the AFC Champions League.
