Christian Gavina has been named the new head coach of the University of the East Red Warriors men’s basketball team.
Gavina, who has previously coached the Terrafirma Dyip and the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the PBA, succeeds Jack Santiago, whose contract was not renewed at the conclusion of 2024.
UE President Zosimo Battad stated that the university anticipates significant progress for the Red Warriors under Gavina’s leadership, given his vast experience in both domestic and international basketball.
“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Chris Gavina to the Red Warriors family. His leadership, passion and experience in both local and international basketball will be instrumental in molding our new breed of champions,” Battad said in a statement.
In response, Gavina conveyed his enthusiasm for taking on the role, highlighting the importance of culture-building, defensive discipline, and player development as fundamental aspects of his coaching approach.
“I am honored to coach the UE Red Warriors, a program that has produced legends of Philippine basketball. For those who cherish basketball history, I am humbled to step into the role once held by the phenomenal Coach Baby Dalupan, who led this institution to its golden era,” Gavina said.
“The UE Red Warriors have a rich tradition, and I am eager to instill a culture of hard work, resilience and accountability. My goal is to help these young men reach their fullest potential by fostering a relentless work ethic, which, when paired with that never-say-die spirit, will make us a force to reckon with,” he added.
Serving as Gavina’s assistant coaches are Alex Cabagnot and former Red Warriors players Rob Labagala, Paulo Hubalde, and Rommel Niño Cañaleta.
