Clutch Ahanmisi Pull Alaska’s Escape Over Gritty NorthPort
Maverick Ahanmisi came up with key baskets down the stretch as Alaska Aces escaped with a 102-94 win over gritty NorthPort Batang Pier in the 2020 PBA Philippine Cup on Friday at the AUF Sports Arena & Cultural Center in Pampanga.
After seeing its once 90-76 lead trimmed to 92-96 on consecutive hits from Batang Pier’s Christian Standhardinger and Garvo Lanete, Ahanmisi converted a basket with 37 seconds left to give the Aces a 98-92 edge.
The Batang Pier failed to capitalize on the next possession as Lanete only drained two of his three free throws before Ahanmisi and Rodney Brondial sealed the victory for the Aces with their free throws.
Ahanmisi finished the match with 11 points, four rebounds and eight assists as the Aces secured at least a knockout for a playoffs seat with its 6-4 win-loss slate.
Brondial and Abu Tratter led the way for Alaska with 16 points each, Jeron Teng added 14 markers, while Robbie Herndon and Vic Manuel also finished in double-digits with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Standhardinger ended the match with career-best 39 points to go along with 14 rebounds, while Lanete and Kelly Nabong added 11 markers each for the Batang Pier, which dropped to 1-7.
