Coach Na, Tropa Pa – Louie Alas explains relationship between Coach Topex Robinson and Calvin Abueva
Now-former Phoenix head coach Louie Alas had the honor and privilege to coach the enigmatic but high-octane player Calvin Abueva.
All good things must come to an end for Alas, and he is confident that ‘The Beast’ will be in good hands with interim coach Topex Robinson.
“Malaking tulong din ‘yan kay coach Topex [Robinson]. Kailangan kumpleto ‘yung team,” Alas said on his interview with Spin.ph.
The coach-player relationship dates back in 2011 where Coach Topex was coaching Abueva in San Sebastian Golden Stags.
Robinson and Abueva could relate to each other as well, since both of them have African-American fathers.
“Matagal na niyang kasama [si Calvin]. Hindi rin sila coach-player relationship. Magkaibigan ‘yan eh,” Alas explained.
“‘Yun ang kailangan [ni Calvin], kaibigan na mafi-feel niya na sincere ka. Sabi nga sa lingo ng player, ‘Wag mong iku-cooking. ‘Wag mong bobolahin.”
Abueva, who has been suspended for over a year after attacking former TNT import Terrence Jones, has yet to be reinstated by the PBA despite completing his requirements set by league commissioner Willie Marcial.
