Coach Pat Aquino, Afril Bernandino ask PH fans to support women’s basketball
Now that the Philippines women’s basketball captured their first-ever gold medal in 30th Southeast Asian Games, head coach Pat Aquino had one request for the Filipino hoop fans who witnessed them play.
“I’m just so happy for the girls for what they have achieved. Now, we hope na mapansin niyo kami,” said the NU head coach.
“It’s been a long time, we’ve been doing this since 2015, and now the gold is with us, and I’m just so happy not just for my girls squad only, but also for the whole country and for the women’s side of everything.”
The PH lady hoopers first ruled the 3-on-3 basketball event, and they also dominated the 5-on-5 competition — both of which earned them a gold finish.
PH forward Afril Bernandino dedicated her gold medal to all the aspiring lady hoopers who were not chosen to play for the national team.
“Nasa lalake (Gilas Pilipinas) yung atensyon, pero sa SEA Games we wanted to get the gold for the women’s basketball because after college wala nang mapupuntahan ang women’s basketball,” said the UAAP three-time MVP.
Bernandino also hopes that their SEA Games success will be the start of something new for the women’s basketball
“We hope na magkaroon ng women’s basketball sa commercial or any league tor women para may mapuntahan after college.”
