Coach Tim Cone confirms Kai Sotto set to rejoin Gilas in FIBA World Cup Qualifiers

KAI Sotto is set to suit up once again for Gilas Pilipinas in the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers later this month, giving the national team a major boost ahead of its crucial games against Jordan and Iran.

Gilas head coach Tim Cone confirmed that Sotto has already joined the team in practice after making time from his club commitments with the Koshigaya Alphas in Japan to represent the Philippines in the August qualifying window.

“We had our first day of practice and it was great especially because Kai joined us in practice and is taking a break from his schedule to play for us in the Window,” Cone told Fastbreak in a Viber message.

“As we have said, it’s a do or die situation and we’re extremely happy that he responded to the call. No doubt, he’s a game-changer for us. I already feel like a better coach with him in the fold,” he added.

Sotto’s availability had been uncertain in the weeks leading up to the window as the Gilas coaching staff awaited confirmation of his schedule.

His arrival gives Cone another major option in the frontcourt as Gilas prepares for two games that could have a significant impact on the Philippines’ bid to qualify for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Cone said the team has 10 days to prepare for the qualifying games and reported that most of the players had already joined the team’s preparations.

“We are still awaiting Justin’s return from the US, but we expect him shortly. Otherwise, everyone showed up and we got right to work. We have 10 days to prep. We’re all excited,” Cone said.

The Philippines is also dealing with uncertainty surrounding Quentin Millora-Brown, who is recovering from hernia surgery, and the absence of Michael Phillips due to his brother.

With some of Gilas’ frontcourt options unavailable or uncertain, Sotto’s presence becomes particularly important.
