Comboy, FEU frustrate UE Warriors
The Tams finally got their first win this Season 82
FEU Tamaraws relied on Wendell Comboy’s hot shooting to vanquish UE Red Warriors, 85-61, in the UAAP Season 82 men’s basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum, on Sunday September 8.
Comboy made UE’s defense pay by registering career-high 24 points (18 in the second half) on 6-of-9 shooting from the rainbow territory.
L-Jay Gonzales filled up the stat sheets with career-best 14 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, and three steals.
“Tradition naman sa FEU yun, na guard-heavy kami. We rely on our guards and this season is no different,” said FEU head coach Olsen Racela.
FEU’s frontcourt also did a remarkable job in the paint, as Pat Tchuente tallied nine points and six rebounds while Barkley Eboña chalked up seven markers, six boards, and six assists.
The Tams now own a 1-1 win-loss record.
UE still did not back down without a fight, as they were able to cut the lead by five, 53-58, to start the final period.
However, the Morayta-based university mounted a 10-0 blitz which became a 68-53 lead, making sure that their neighboring school from Recto would not recover anymore.
Alex Diakhite hulked up 21 points (19 in the second half), 15 rebounds, and four swats, while Rey Suerte also had a similar feat of 17 markers and 10 boards.
Still, UE have yet to win a game as they slid to 0-2 win-loss card.
