Daquis, Paat power HD Spikers into semis; UP in Collegiate finals

Cignal bucked a slow start before turning down Foton, 26-28, 25-19, 25-19, 25-18, to earn a semifinals ticket in the Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

With the troika of Rachel Anne Daquis, Mylene Paat and Royse Tubino doing damage, the HD Spikers knocked out the fourth seeded Tornadoes in their quarterfinal duel in this prestigious club tourney bankrolled by Isuzu, Mikasa, Senoh, Asics, Mueller, UCPB Gen and Bizooku with Genius Sports as technical partners.

Meanwhile, University of the Philippines punched the first finals berth after dominating De La Salle University-Dasmarinas, 25-21, 25-12, 25-22, in the Collegiate Grand Slam.

Caryl Sandoval showed the way with 11 points while Jessma Ramos and rookie Nicole Magsarile delivered eight hits apiece for the Lady Maroons, who finished the preliminaries with a 4-1 win-loss card.

Marist Layug, Lorie Bernardo and Justine Dorog also shone with six markers apiece.

“It’s a good feeling to be in the finals, being in the finals makes a team and a coach feel and learn how to win and in the finals its do or die, lose or win,” said UP head coach Godfrey Okumu.

“You don’t have any option but to win. I hope it’s a good legacy, something we’ve started being in the finals and we’ll continue all the way to the UAAP.”

Carlos will return to action in the winner-take-all finals duel, probably against unbeaten University of Santo Tomas, which only needs to win one of their last two elimination games.

“I think we have a date with UST on the 12th,” Okumu added.

Basilyn Delfin was the lone bright spot for the Lady Patriots with 13 points as De La Salle-Dasmarinas fell to 0-3 and will take on UST on Thursday at the Muntinlupa Sports Center.

Earlier, Far Eastern University stopped a woeful three-game skid as it fought back from a 2-1 set deficit before denying University of the East in a five-set thriller, 14-25, 25-23, 16-25, 25-18, 15-13, to end its elimination round with a 2-3 slate.

Daquis unloaded 24 points laced with 18 excellent receptions while Paat dropped 22 hits including 12 digs.
Tubino was also instrumental with 13 markers for the HD Spikers, who forged a semifinals duel with undefeated Petron Blaze Spikers on Tuesday at the Muntinlupa Sports Center.

Mina Aganon delivered 16 points, including 17 digs and 10 excellent receptions, while CJ Rosario and returning Shaya Adorador, who came back after missing several games due to tooth infection, had 12 and 11 markers,
respectively, for Foton, which still finished the preliminaries with a 6-4 win-loss card despite the absence of star players Jaja Santiago and Dindin Manabat.
