Dehado pa rin? Gilas Pilipinas wary of taller, athletic Angola squad
Gilas Pilipinas coach Yeng Guiao expects the matchup between his squad and Angola, the remaining winless teams in Group D of the 2019 FIBA World Cup, will go toe-to-toe on Wednesday for their final game in the group stage.
Despite a rank advantage, Guiao said Gilas will not take Angola lightly considering they enjoy a size advantage.
The average height of Angola is 6-foot-5, while the Philippines is 6-foot-3.
Gilas and Angola will face each other on Wednesday at the Foshan International Sports & Cultural Arena in China.
“We have a slight advantage in terms of skills but they are taller. This is not going to be an easy game but I think we have a chance against Angola,” Guiao said.
Gilas is looking to replicate its one win record at the group stage from the previous edition of the tournament.
Gilas defeated Senegal in the 2014 Fiba World Cup in Spain after hacking out close losses at the hands of Croatia, Greece, Argentina, and Puerto Rico.
Guiao said the African style of basketball is physical and this will be a factor in their matchup.
He said that their tuneup games with Ivory Coast prior to the tournament will suit Gilas well as African nations play the same way.
