Questions continue to surround the coaching future of former national team setter Cristina Salak after her absence from Akari’s bench triggered discussions among volleyball fans, with speculation emerging over her departure from the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) squad.
Salak was present during the Chargers’ first two matches in the 2026-27 PVL All-Filipino Conference Siklab Series but subsequently missed their succeeding games, prompting Eddieson Orcullo to take over as interim head coach starting with their match against PLDT.
Her situation has also drawn attention because of her previous coaching stint with Far Eastern University, which reportedly ended before her latest involvement with Akari.
Discussions on the Reddit community r/PhilippinesVolleyball have centered on possible disagreements between Salak and players over her coaching methods, although these claims remain unverified and neither the coach nor the teams involved have publicly confirmed the circumstances behind her absence.
Some online commenters suggested that players may have struggled to adjust to Salak’s approach, while others defended her coaching style and pointed to the need for athletes to accept criticism and discipline.
There were also discussions about her previous departure from FEU, including speculation that differences with players may have contributed to the situation. However, no official explanation has been provided to establish the reasons behind her exit.
Another development raised by fans was Salak’s reported move to the United States, based on her social media activity. This has further fueled questions about whether she intends to continue coaching or take a break from the sport.
Despite the growing speculation, there has been no formal announcement confirming Salak’s departure from Akari or retirement from coaching.
The former national team setter remains highly regarded by volleyball followers for her playing career, with some fans expressing hope that she will eventually return to the sidelines. (Adrian Co)
