Hidilyn Diaz’s bid to end the country’s long gold medal drought in the Olympic Games got a tremendous boost.
Diaz turned in an amazing performance in the 2020 Weightlifting World Cup in Rome, Italy by hauling three gold medals in the women’s 55 kilogram division.
The 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games silver medalist lifted 93 kilograms in the snatch and 119 kilograms in the clean and jerk for a total of 212 kilograms to complete her three gold medal haul.
The Philippines started participating in the quadrennial games since 1924. Ten Filipino athletes have won a medal in the Olympics Games with boxers Anthony Villanueva and Mansueto Velasco producing two silvers. Weightlifting, courtesy of Diaz, added the country’s third silver finish.
No Filipino athlete has ever won the gold medal in the last 96 years. It is one of the longest gold medal droughts in the history of the games.
Diaz is aiming to end this dubious mark soon.
The 2020 Olympic Games is scheduled to begin in the last week of July in Tokyo, Japan.
