Shevana Laput expressed her disappointment over what she perceived as a referee error during a critical juncture in their 22-25, 25-17, 17-25, 27-25, and 16-14 loss to the Adamson University Lady Falcons in Game 1 of the Shakey’s Super League finals.
The contentious incident unfolded when both the Lady Spikers and the Lady Falcons were knotted at 14-all, and the referee cited Laput for a block touch that granted Adamson a match point.
According to Laput, she refrained from making contact with the ball as the Lady Falcons’ Red Bascon attempted a hit; she withdrew her hands at the last moment, resulting in the ball going out of bounds.
“It is sad there was no challenge,” Laput told the media after the match on Wednesday night. “You know, you cannot help it. [The referee] saw what he saw, but I did not touch the ball.”
“It is what it is. The referee saw what he saw and what he thought he saw,” added the younger sister of Magnolia Chicken Timplados Hotshots center James Laput.
Despite Shevana’s impressive performance, her career-best game of 30 points for the Lady Spikers went in vain due to the defeat.
The championship series’ Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday night at the FilOil EcoOil Arena in San Juan City.
