DOLE fines Tab Baldwin, Ateneo over employment permit violations

THE Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has imposed separate fines on former Ateneo de Manila University coach Tab Baldwin and the university over violations involving his employment permits.

Baldwin was fined P4.9 million for failing to secure a certificate of exemption from the AEP requirement.

Ateneo de Manila University was likewise fined P4.9 million for employing Baldwin without the required permits.

The DOLE ruling also carries possible immigration consequences for Baldwin. The department is set to refer the decision to the Bureau of Immigration for possible summary deportation proceedings over his employment in the Philippines without the necessary documents.

Counsels for both Baldwin and Ateneo said they would explore available legal remedies following the decision.

The case stems from questions over Baldwin’s employment documentation during his tenure with Ateneo. The American coach previously served as head coach of the Ateneo Blue Eagles before leaving his post.

The DOLE action comes amid heightened scrutiny of Ateneo following the June 8 deaths of student-athletes Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili during an off-campus team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.

The employment permit case is separate from the ongoing investigations into the deaths of the two student-athletes. (Adrian Co)
