Edu’s son Diego Aspiras joins Geylang International in Singapore Premier League

FILIPINO footballer Diego Aspiras has taken the next step in his career after joining Geylang International FC in the Singapore Premier League.

The 22-year-old midfielder, the son of actor Edu Manzano with chef Reggie Aspiras, is set to become the first homegrown Filipino player to compete in Singapore’s top-flight league, according to a post by his father.

Manzano shared photos of Aspiras in Geylang International colors and expressed his pride in his son’s latest career move.

“That’s my son Diego, now playing in Singapore,” Manzano wrote on X.

“At only 22, he has joined Geylang International and has become the first homegrown Filipino footballer to play in the Singapore Premier League.”

Aspiras previously played for Taguig FC before making the move to Singapore, where he will face a new level of competition and a different football environment.

Manzano acknowledged the work and sacrifices behind his son’s progress while urging him to remain focused as he begins his stint overseas.

“I know the sacrifices, the discipline and the hard work it took to get here,” Manzano said.

“But this is only the beginning. A new country. A new league. A bigger challenge.”

He also encouraged Aspiras to continue developing while representing the Philippines abroad.

“Keep working, keep learning and keep carrying our flag with pride Diego,” Manzano added. “Go make your own history son. We’re all behind you.”

Aspiras’ move adds another Filipino player to the growing number of footballers seeking opportunities in leagues outside the country, with his Singapore stint providing him a chance to gain experience in an overseas professional competition. (Adrian Co)
