EJ Obiena set for knee surgery
EJ Obiena will go under the knife to have his meniscus cleaned, according to long-time mentor James Lafferty.
“The MRI was not clear on some of the other parts of his knee, it’s quite unique what they’re gonna do. EJ is gonna be conscious during the surgery,” said Lafferty to ABS-CBN News’ Dyan Castillejo.
“They’ll go in and clean up the meniscus, which is a quite straightforward procedure. Now, the doctor’s gonna take a look around. If he sees something else that has to be fixed, he wants EJ conscious, so that he can literally ask him on the spot, ‘Do you give me permission to do x or y?'” he added.
Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William “Butch” Ramirez said on Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum that the sporting agency have committed to provide the Tokyo Olympian financial assistance for his surgery.
Obiena, who currently holds the Asian record of 5.93 meters, will be competing in the Init Indoor Meeting in Karlsruhe, Germany starting on January 28.
He will also see action in the Asian Indoor Athletics Championship from February 11 to 13 in Kazakhstan.
