BARANGAY Ginebra San Miguel head coach Tim Cone dismissed speculation of a rift between Justin Brownlee and Gin Kings team governor Al Chua following the Gilas Pilipinas game against New Zealand last July.
“Of course not!! Coach Al loves Justin,” Cone told Fastbreak on Friday when asked to clarify reports of a supposed feud between the two.
Rumors of a misunderstanding gained traction on social media after Chua was seen appearing displeased with Brownlee during the national team’s double overtime loss against New Zealand last July, where the naturalized Filipino struggled offensively and finished with just five points.
Brownlee has not played for either Gilas Pilipinas or Barangay Ginebra since that game reportedly due to various injuries, fueling further speculation about his status.
The 38-year-old forward missed the early part of the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup, the fourth window of 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers and the 2026 Asian Games.
His availability for the resumption of the Governors’ Cup also remains doubtful, leaving Ginebra with an uncertain import situation heading into the continuation of its title campaign.
Cone’s statement sought to put an end to the speculation surrounding Brownlee and Chua, emphasizing that the team governor continues to have a positive relationship with the veteran import.
The three-time PBA Best Import has been a key figure in Ginebra’s success over the years, helping the Kings win seven PBA championships. (Adrian Co)
