Perpetual Help relied on Prince Eze’s late put back as it stunned Lyceum of the Philippines University, 83-81, and averted a sweep in the 94th NCAA basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.
With the game tied at 81-all, Eze caught the three-point attempt by teammate Tonton Peralta that hit nothing but air and scored the basket just a tenth of a second before time expired as the Altas snared their seventh win against five defeats that kept their Final Four hopes alive.
They also denied the Pirates a sweep for the second straight season and dropped to their first setback after 12 straight victories.
And the 6-9 Nigerian is starting to get the feel of making those kind of big shots as he also made one in 78-76 win over San Sebastian in the first round on Aug. 9 at the Perpetual Help Gym in Las Pinas.
While Eze hit the biggest shot of all, it was Edgar Charcos who paved the way for it as he scored four points in row to tie the showdown at 81.
Charcos, on his second game after missing three due to a knee injury, finished with 20 points.
