EARL Scottie Thompson’s modest numbers in Gilas Pilipinas’ dramatic 82-81 overtime victory over Jordan have triggered a discussion online over how much value a player can provide without making a major impact on the scoring column.
Thompson finished with just one point, seven rebounds and three assists, statistics that led some fans to question his overall performance. However, others pointed to his defensive work and hustle as important factors in the Philippines’ escape against Jordan in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers.
One social media post on Facebook emphasized that Thompson’s contribution went beyond his scoring output.
“Hindi man flashy ang naging stats ni Scottie Thompson, pero dumating siya sa pinakamahalagang moments para tumulong sa Gilas Pilipinas sa win kontra Jordan,” the post said.
It added that his numbers “may not immediately jump off the stat sheet, but his impact went beyond scoring.”
Another discussion focused specifically on Thompson’s defense against Jordan’s key offensive players, particularly Jalen Harris and Abdullah Olajuwon.
“Basketball isn’t just about offense and scoring points,” one commenter wrote, defending Thompson’s contribution.
A separate post also credited Thompson for making it difficult for Jordan’s guards to operate comfortably, noting that he was able to disrupt Harris and Olajuwon with his defensive pressure.
“Kung ako sa mga kabataang naglalaro, pinanood ko ’yung depensa ni Scottie Thompson,” the post said.
Thompson’s effort was particularly noticeable during the latter stages of the contest, when Gilas needed stops and extra possessions as Jordan threatened to take control.
His performance, however, was not without mistakes.
A five-second violation on an inbound play late in the game drew criticism from some fans, with the error becoming one of the most discussed moments surrounding his performance.
Still, supporters argued that judging Thompson solely by that play or his scoring total overlooked the defensive responsibilities he handled throughout the contest.
“Hindi lang puro offense ang basketball. Kailangan din ng depensa,” another post pointed out.
The debate reflects the broader challenge of measuring Thompson’s contribution in a game where Gilas relied on several players to produce at critical moments.
Kevin Quiambao hit the go-ahead three-pointer in overtime, Kai Sotto made the decisive defensive play by blocking Jordan’s potential game-winning attempt, while C.J. Perez also came through during the final stretch.
For Thompson, the victory was less about individual statistics and more about fulfilling a defensive and supporting role as Gilas held off Jordan in a tense finish.
The win improved the Philippines’ record to 3-4 in the qualifiers and kept its World Cup hopes alive. (Adrian Co)
