Fighting Maroons manhandle UE in late period
The UP Fighting Maroons scored a huge win against UE Red Warriors, 85-71, in the UAAP Season 81 men’s basketball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Arena on Sunday, October 21.
UE gave the Fighting Maroons a great fight in the first three quarters, even leading the game from time to time despite a back-and-forth game.
However, Diego Dario’s three consecutive triples in the fourth period ignited UP’s 18-2 run to break away against UE with a win.
Juan Gomez De Liaño made history by tallying UAAP’s first-ever triple-double since 2006, collecting 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists.
Bright Akhuetie had his usual numbers with 28 points and 13 rebounds. Paul Desiderio had 16 points and eight rebounds, while Dario added 13.
“It was the effort from the second half that made us believe again that we can compete this season,” said UP head coach Bo Perasol.
With that win, UP boosted their playoff hopes while also improving their card at 4-5.
Meanwhile, Alvin Pasaol powered UE with 30 points and nine rebounds, while Phillip Manalang had 15 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists.
UE continues to struggle this season, as they fell to a 1-8 card.
