Juan Gomez De Liano lifted the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons past University of the East Red Warriors, 87-58, in the opening game of the UAAP Season 81 men’s basketball tournament.

After a slow start, Alvin Pasaol and the rest of the Red Warriors slowly woke up to tie the game at 33-apiece.

The Fighting Maroons used a strong third quarter surge behind De Liano to lead the match, 58-45.

“We know what to do regarding if its going to be man-zone. It’s just part of the first game jitters,” said Fighting Maroons head coach Bo Perasol.

Gomez de Liano finished with 16 points and seven rebounds while Bright Akhuetie had a double-double performance of 15 points and 18 boards.

Pasaol was the lone bright spot for UE, with 14 points in a losing effort.

UP will next face the defending champions Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles on Wednesday, September 12, at the Araneta Coliseum.
