Filipino-American guard Kihei Clark has worked out with the Los Angeles Lakers in hopes of getting selected in the upcoming NBA Rookie Draft next month.
Clark, who traced his roots to Ilocos, was one of the six NBA rookie aspirants who were invited to showcase their talents at the Lakers’ training facility on Friday (Saturday in Manila).
The Virginia Cavaliers point guard held the distinction of being the second Filipino-American player to win a US NCAA championship since UCLA’s Raymond Townsend in 1975.
Clark and the Cavaliers captured the US NCAA Division 1 crown in 2019 when they scored an 85-77 overtime victory against the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the finals.
Clark’s collegiate career, however, ended on a sour note early this year as he committed a costly turnover that caused the No. 4 seed Cavaliers’ 68-67 loss to the No. 13 Furman Paladins.
The Lakers own the No. 17 and No. 47 picks in the upcoming NBA Draft, slated for June 23 (Manila time) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
