The Philippine women’s national football team suffered a 2-0 setback against Switzerland in the FIFA Women’s World Cup on Friday at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin, New Zealand.
Ramona Bachmann and Seraina Piubel each scored a goal for Switzerland, which joined New Zealand in the lead of Group A.
The world No. 46 Filipinas had to contend against the constant attacks by the Swiss, especially in the second half.
The Pinays were actually able to force the ball into the back of the net in the 16th minute, but it was ruled offside.
Switzerland scored its first goal minutes from halftime when the referees awarded a penalty after Jessika Cowart was called for a foul.
Ramona Bachmann made the kick that got past Olivia McDaniel to give Switzerland the lead.
Piubel then scored the second goal for Switzerland in the 64th. Piubel pounced on a rebound to give the Swiss a 2-0 lead.
The Filipinas will next battle co-host New Zealand on July 25 at the Wellington Regional Stadium.
